New Jersey City University has unveiled plans to honor Paul Silverman, the longtime Jersey City developer, business leader and philanthropist, at its upcoming gala.
The university will recognize Silverman, a co-founder and principal of SILVERMAN, at its 2022 NJCU Leadership Awards on May 31. He will be among four individuals highlighted in an annual celebration of those who have made a lasting impact on society in the Jersey City and the greater Hudson County area, receiving the honor in the arts category.
“I’m proud to have accomplished, and continue to accomplish, the rebuilding of Jersey City,” said Silverman, who co-founded the firm in 1981 alongside his brother, Eric Silverman. “Along with my brother Eric and our entire SILVERMAN team, we create great places for people to live and work. We support small businesses, support education and support the arts. I give of my time and money to nurture these causes. Helping others succeed brings me joy.”
Presented by the NJCU Foundation, the event will honor four individuals in the categories of service, arts, innovation and legacy. Paul Silverman joins previously announced honorees including New Jersey State Assembly Deputy Majority Leader Angela V. McKnight, while the university will unveil other honorees this month.
The school noted that Silverman has played a critical role in revitalizing several Jersey City neighborhoods by restoring historic buildings, renovating existing ones and new construction, yielding a series of residential, commercial, retail and industrial space. He has also served as chairman of New Jersey Beer Co., a microbrewery producing craft beer, since 2011.
Additionally, Silverman is an active volunteer and philanthropist who previously served 10 years on the NJCU Foundation board and currently sits on the board of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce, according to a news release. He also serves as a trustee emeritus at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The 2022 NJCU Leadership Awards will take place at 6 p.m. on May 31 at the Liberty House at 76 Audrey Zapp Drive in Jersey City.
“I define leadership as setting an example for those around you,” Silverman said. “Setting an example with both words and actions to inspire others to follow your lead, and consistently doing the right thing, at any cost, is the hallmark of leadership. To our future leaders, lead by example. Be proud of your work, and your accomplishments. Give to others because it feels good to give. It feels good to see the success of others in life and in work.”
