Robert S. Goldsmith
By Joshua Burd
Robert S. Goldsmith, a partner with Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith & Davis LLP and one of the state’s most accomplished land use and redevelopment lawyers, has joined the Newark Regional Business Partnership’s newly formed Real Estate Council.
The firm announced the appointment this week, noting that the initiative is meant to bring together a diverse group of NRBP members for candid, in-depth dialogue around real estate development in the greater Newark region. Goldsmith, who co-chairs Greenbaum’s redevelopment and land use practice, comes to the role with decades of experience representing private- and public-sector clients in major redevelopment projects and participating in some of the commercial real estate and legal industries’ most prominent organizations.
Notably, he provided counsel to special improvement districts in downtown Newark and in the city’s Ironbound section, the firm said. He has also played key roles in a more than $500 million transit-oriented redevelopment in Hoboken, a $400 million downtown revitalization in Morristown and the creation of New Jersey’s first revenue allocation district for the City of Millville, which established a model for modern redevelopment financing statewide.
A recognized leader in New Jersey’s redevelopment sector, Goldsmith has received top rankings by Chambers USA for the Real Estate: Zoning/Land Use category and has consistently been listed in Best Lawyers in America and New Jersey Super Lawyers, according to a news release. He has argued precedent-setting cases before the New Jersey Supreme Court on behalf of leading municipal and planning organizations, clarifying the statutory limits of municipal redevelopment designations and defining the lawful scope of special improvement district assessments, with statewide impact on redevelopment financing and planning policy.
Beyond his legal practice, Goldsmith recently served on Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s Interdisciplinary Advisory Task Force, which brought together leaders from across New Jersey to provide practical, real-world perspectives as the administration shapes policy priorities, Greenbaum said. He is a director and past president of Downtown New Jersey, a trustee of New Jersey Future, a New Jersey committee member of the Regional Plan Association, a member and former legislative committee co-chair of NAIOP New Jersey and a member of the New Jersey Builders Association and the Counselors of Real Estate New Jersey chapter.
