LeFrak has unveiled a new lighthouse and park space along the Hudson River in Jersey City, marking the latest public amenity in the acclaimed Newport neighborhood.
The developer said the location, known as Lighthouse Point, provides a vibrant, open destination that centers on the 50-foot-tall blue and white structure. The space off River Drive South includes a lawn for picnics, activities like cornhole and Adirondack chairs.
“Being able to enjoy a walk along the Hudson River is a major benefit to living in Jersey City,” Mayor Steven Fulop said. “Newport has done good work around the importance of providing amenities for all Jersey City residents to use, with Lighthouse Point being the latest addition. It’s an important contribution to the city’s fabric.”
Newport, where the LeFrak and Simon families have spent decades transforming abandoned rail yards, docks and industrial factories and warehouses, now consists of homes for more than 12,000 people, 5 million square feet of high-end office space and a host of other public spaces. The debut of Lighthouse Point follows the arrival of the eight-story “Water’s Soul” sculpture two years ago.
To date, Newport has built many acres of public space along the Hudson River, including 1.1 miles of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, LeFrak said.
“The opening of this space is yet another example of Newport’s commitment to the people of Jersey City,” said Jeremy Farrell, managing director at Newport. “This is a place for people to gather, enjoy and take in the views that are inextricably linked to this neighborhood. As with Water’s Soul these open spaces serve to affirm that community is at the heart of everything Newport does.”
Jersey City Ward E Councilman James Solomon added: “Green spaces play a significant role in fostering a vibrant and healthy Jersey City. Thank you to all who made this public space possible for everyone in Jersey City!”
