A fast-growing technology firm has opened the doors to its new 30,000-square-foot headquarters in Englewood Cliffs.
OwnBackup, a backup and recovery vendor for cloud data, announced Monday that it has moved into the space at 940 Sylvan Ave. The company occupies the entire first floor at the Sylvan Corporate Center building, giving it space for up to 160 employees.
The lease, which OwnBackup signed last year, comes amid the company’s rapid ascent in New Jersey. The venture said it has secured nearly $50 million in funding, including a $23.25 million Series C raise earlier this year, and has doubled its staff size every year since 2016.
The company joined public officials recently to unveil the new space.
“Bergen County is excited to welcome OwnBackup and its growing base of employees to Englewood Cliffs,” Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco said. “Bergen County is one of the best places to live, raise a family and work, thanks to our highly skilled workforce, excellent schools and parks, and diverse downtowns. Our strong county economic development team helps businesses like OwnBackup thrive, because we believe in investing in each other, our workforce and our shared future.”
In recent years, OwnBackup has emerged as a top cloud data protection platform for the increasing number of businesses using Salesforce for their customer-relationship management services or other enterprise applications, according to a news release. Through its integration with Salesforce, the firm helps more than 1,400 businesses worldwide prevent data corruption and loss, ensure business continuity, minimize operational disruptions and meet compliance mandates.
“The opening of our new Englewood Cliffs headquarters marks a milestone in what has been an incredibly exciting period of expansion for OwnBackup, as global demand continues to increase for reliable cloud data protection,” CEO Sam Gutmann said. “It was especially important to us that we harness this growth here in Bergen County, which provides proximity to Manhattan while allowing us to tap into an abundance of highly skilled tech talent in the surrounding region.”
The company described its headquarters design as a collaborative, open layout centered on a full auditorium for community events, including Salesforce user groups, the news release said. The space features perks including a gaming room with arcade and console games, a spa-style lounge with massage chairs, a “pub” area with fully stocked beer taps and a full kitchen.
OwnBackup’s recent expansion has made it the second-fastest growing tech company in New Jersey, the news release said, citing an annual list by Inc. Magazine. The firm expects to hire in the coming months for roles including sales, marketing, customer support, product, technical support and administration.
Public officials also hailed the new headquarters as a victory in New Jersey’s collective efforts to attract, retain and nurture technology companies, including recent programs by the state Economic Development Authority to encourage venture capital investment in high-tech, New Jersey-based companies and to provide rent assistance to early-stage startups.
“Businesses like OwnBackup are the backbone of America and they drive our technology-based economy forward,” Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mario M. Kranjac said. “Englewood Cliffs has emerged as a place where startups, development stage companies and Fortune 500 companies can thrive, grow and prosper. Their employees can live comfortably here, raise their families, run, cycle, walk, hike and kayak all in view of New York City.”
