Facing what appears to be a lack of support, the top backers of a media campaign to expand casino gaming to northern New Jersey have suspended their advertisements.
The move by Paul Fireman and Jeff Gural comes amid sagging public opinion and internal polls commissioned by the campaign, which found a waning appetite for the proposed expansion, according to multiple reports. Both men — the billionaire founder of Reebok and the real estate mogul who owns the Meadowlands Racetrack, respectively — have been vocal in their support and were the most high-profile backers of a Nov. 8 ballot question to legalize the expansion.
Fireman has proposed building a high-end casino resort near his Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City, while Gural has discussed building a gaming hall into the newly built racetrack grandstand in East Rutherford. But the suspension of so-called Our Turn NJ campaign raises major doubts about the viability of the ballot question in November.
