Developers have broken ground on a project that will bring 153 new apartments and commercial space to downtown Carteret, borough officials announced Tuesday.
Located at 21 Washington Ave., the complex by Kalian Cos. and Epstein Family Investments
will soon rise across from the URSB Carteret Performing Arts & Events Center, according to a news release. Plans call for a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom rentals, along with a two-story parking garage and 4,885 square feet of street-level retail space as part of a projected $41 million investment.
“The Kalian and Epstein partnership is proud to be developing this exciting development that will continue the growth and progress of the Carteret Arts District,” said Tyler Kalian, vice president of development for Kalian Cos, whose firm also operates a 64-unit apartment building at 29 Washington Ave.
Carteret noted that 21 Washington is among several planned downtown and waterfront multiuse properties. Slated for completion in early 2025, it’s part of a $300 million redevelopment plan comprising mixed-use buildings and more than 30,000 square feet of commercial space.
“Downtown Carteret is a smart growth redevelopment area that is now thriving,” Mayor Daniel Reiman said. “Carteret is quickly becoming one of the most desired locations for New Jersey residents to call home. New residential and commercial opportunities, combined with Carteret’s upcoming ferry service, the Performing Arts and Events Center, upgraded parks, stable tax rates, and tremendous diversity solidify Carteret as a great place to live, work and raise a family.”
