Denholtz has added to its leadership team with the hiring of Jonathan Callahan, tapping the former Related Management Co. executive as its general counsel.
In a news release, the Red Bank-based firm said Callahan brings more than 15 years of experience and will oversee all legal matters. He’ll also serve as a key member of Denholtz’s executive leadership team, supporting its capital markets, property management and asset management operations, among other areas.
“Throughout his career, Jonathan has demonstrated a proven ability to enhance and transform the organizations that he’s been part of,” Denholtz CEO Katie Kurtz said. “We are confident that his deep expertise and diverse skillset will help us achieve our strategic growth goals.”
Callahan is a former senior vice president and general counsel with Related Management, the captive management subsidiary of The Related Cos. In that role, he oversaw all legal and affordable housing compliance functions for the company’s expansive corporate platform, as well as 450 multifamily properties across 23 states and the District of Columbia.
Prior to his time at Related, Callahan served as managing counsel at Reliant Realty Services LLC, a New York City-based full-service property management firm that has since been acquired by Nuveen, the news release said. During this time, Callahan redesigned and operationalized the company’s in-house legal department, which resulted in a significant reduction of rent arrears and an influx of monthly cash collections.
“Denholtz has built a strong reputation and garnered industry-wide respect over the past several decades,” Callahan said. “I am excited to join the firm during this exciting chapter and work closely with Katie and the entire leadership team to strengthen our infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and execute our growth strategy.”
Earlier in his career, Callahan held roles as litigation counsel at StuyTown Property Services and CompassRock Real Estate LLC, where he most notably oversaw the creation of an in-house litigation team for the largest rental multifamily project in the United States, the news release said. He is also a former associate attorney at Rose & Rose, a boutique real estate litigation and regulatory firm, while he holds a juris doctor from Yeshiva University and a bachelor’s from Syracuse University.
