The developers of the upscale MC Hotel in Montclair have broken ground on a new 40-unit apartment building that will rise adjacent to the downtown property.
Known as the MC Residences, the project at 37 Orange Road is a joint venture of The Hampshire Cos. and The Pinnacle Cos., with investment partner Circle Squared Alternative Investments. The four-story building is slated to be available for both annual leasing and short-term stays starting in late 2023, the developers said, offering a mix of furnished and unfurnished units with valet parking, electric car chargers and a host of amenity spaces.
Minno & Wasko Architects and Planners leads the project’s design team, while Deugen Development is its general contractor.
“We are excited to expand our footprint in Montclair with the opening of The MC Residences in late 2023,” said Jon Hanson, chairman and founder of The Hampshire Cos. “We are passionate about this growing community and we are looking forward to offering to Montclair a residential property that goes beyond the ordinary. From energy-efficient design to hotel style services, residents will be able to get a top-notch experience surrounded by the charm of one of the best destinations in the New York metropolitan area.”
In a news release, the partners said MC Residences will have a club room with an outdoor patio, a shared residential rooftop space, a co-working and private event space, a package locker system, a food hall and more than 4,000 square feet of public plaza space. A portion of the units will be managed and serviced by the MC Hotel, an Autograph Collection hotel operated by Chicago-based Aparium Hotel Group, which the joint venture opened in 2019.
Hanson was on hand for the Oct. 19 groundbreaking ceremony alongside other Hampshire team members and representatives of Pinnacle, Circle Squared and the municipality.
“The MC Residences represents the last piece of the Montclair Center Gateway Redevelopment Area,” said Brian Stolar, CEO and president of The Pinnacle Cos. “We have been able to transform old lots into luxury apartments, a hotel, retail space, corporate offices, restaurants, a public plaza and a public parking deck. These developments will continue to help revitalize the western end of the iconic Bloomfield Avenue.”
The MC Residences complex will have 40 units on the three floors above the lobby and retail floor, which will include the new Orange Road Food Hall, the news release said. Apartments will include studios and one- and two-bedroom market-rate units and four affordable units, ranging from one to three bedrooms.
Due to the apartments’ proximity to The MC Hotel, residents will be able to receive specialty hotel amenities and services including valet parking, electric car charging, unit delivery of food and beverage, housekeeping, food delivery management and beyond.
“Circle Squared is proud to have participated in the official groundbreaking ceremony for our 40-unit multifamily building with 2,500 square feet of retail space in Montclair,” said Jeffrey Sica, CEO and president of Circle Squared. “We’re very excited to partner again with The Hampshire Companies and the Pinnacle Companies to develop what we believe will become one of the premier places to live in one of the best downtowns in New Jersey and all of America.”
