A joint venture has taken the wraps off a new 150,000-square-foot Costco Wholesale store in Bayonne, the anchor tenant for a mixed-use development near the city’s waterfront.
The partners, JMF Properties and RD Management, announced Wednesday that Costco has opened its doors at 21 Goldsborough Drive. Additional retail space is now rising at the property, known as Harbor View Marketplace, which sits within the redevelopment area known as the Military Ocean Terminal.
The new wholesale club comes with an 18-pump Costco Gasoline gas station, while the overall project also calls for a residential component with 651 luxury apartments that are now under construction.
“We promised Bayonne-area residents and shoppers an outstanding anchor tenant for Harbor View Marketplace, and we delivered on that promise, less than one year after breaking ground on the project,” said Joe Forgione, the founder and principal of JMF Properties. “We welcome Costco to the community and look forward to continuing to develop a project that will no doubt attract many new shoppers, visitors and residents to this fast growing section of Bayonne.”
The project by JMF and RD Management are among several slated for the 103-acre redevelopment area, a peninsula that juts into New York Harbor. Formerly a base for both the Army and the Navy, the Military Ocean Terminal is now calls for a wide mix of residential, retail, restaurants, commercial space and recreation.
The joint venture’s residential portion will transform a 14-acre site with views of Bayonne Golf Club across an inlet of New York Harbor, according to a news release. Those units will occupy two five-story buildings, which include an 820-space enclosed parking garage, along with 25,000 square feet of amenities such as a resort-style rooftop swimming pool.
The development will be just steps from a planned ferry terminal with service to Manhattan and will offer easy access to NJ Transit’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, the news release said.
“Bayonne is a great place for shoppers who want to break away from Jersey City, Staten Island, or even Manhattan, to get their shopping done,” said Richard Birdoff, principal and president of RD Management. “This is the first Costco in the Jersey City-Bayonne area; not only will it attract more consumers to the region, but it will simplify shopping for area residents and travelers in need of anything from grocery to furniture items or even a quick stop to fill up their car at the 18-pump Costco Gasoline gas station.
“This wholesale retailer is the perfect anchor for Harbor View Marketplace, and we wish nothing but success for Costco and the future development of the center into a complete live-work-play community.”
