The state Economic Development Authority has launched a grant program aimed at sparking new development and art projects in cities that are served by mass transit but saw a drop in commuter foot traffic during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a news release, the agency said it was now taking applications for the one-time funding its the Activation, Revitalization and Transformation or ART Program, with a first round that will focus on Atlantic City and Newark. Funded at $10 million through the American Rescue Plan, the pilot program aims to mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic through the two new programs, one for real estate rehabilitation and development projects and one for arts-based initiatives aimed at engaging public audiences and local communities.
Applications for the first round are due at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, the EDA said. The authority is holding a virtual information session, including a walk-through of the application process, at 1 p.m. June 14, while it will host in-person events in Atlantic City and Newark in the coming weeks to provide allow potential applicants and other stakeholders to learn more about the ART Program.
