A new boutique fitness studio is coming to Newark’s Ironbound section after taking space at Fifty-Five Union, the 403-unit upscale multifamily property developed by J&L Cos.
The fast-growing boutique operator, Alpha Fit Club, will occupy 3,500 square feet under a deal that expands the building’s offerings for renters and complements its long-stated focus on wellness and sustainability. Slated to open to the public in January, the studio will blend high-intensity interval training with total body strength training, creating what J&L described as a supportive and energetic group fitness experience.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Alpha Fit Club to 55 Union,” said Gabriel Lopez, a principal of J&L Cos. “This partnership is a win for our residents, the Ironbound and the city of Newark. Health, sustainability and wellness are at the heart of 55 Union, and Alpha Fit Club will bring new energy and opportunities for fitness to the doorsteps of our community. As a long-term Newark stakeholder, J&L is proud to invest in Newark’s future while building on the strengths of its vibrant neighborhoods.”
Designed by Minno & Wasko Architects and Planners, 55 Union hit the market in 2023 at a site that’s two blocks from Newark Penn Station. The 12-story building has garnered acclaim for its health-focused design and community impact, including what’s known as a Fitwel certification from The Center for Active Design, thanks to elements such as natural light in homes and common areas, access to more than 20,000 square feet of outdoor space and modern fitness facilities.
The project also won the 2024 Urban Land Institute’s Excellence Award for Sustainable Development.
“We’re building something special in Newark,” said Lizzette Pagan and Elizabeth Sutton, Alpha Fit franchisee partners. “This isn’t just about fitness — it’s about bringing people together to support each other, push limits and grow stronger as a unit. The energy in our studio is contagious, and we can’t wait to open our doors to this incredible community.”
J&L said the long-term deal with Alpha Fit Club expands its focus on curating a top-tier, dynamic mix of uses that enriches both residents’ lives and the surrounding area. It also reflects the ongoing momentum in Newark’s Ironbound district, a neighborhood known for its culture, energy and strong sense of community.
“The arrival of a well-known brand like Alpha Fit Club shows that leading businesses believe in the potential of our city and in the strength of the Ironbound,” East Ward Councilman Michael Silva said. “When companies choose to invest here, they boost our local economy, create new opportunities, and reaffirm that Newark is a vibrant, welcoming, and continually growing community.”
