A new Trader Joe’s has opened its doors in Wayne, anchoring a long-awaited, 50,150-square-foot shopping center developed by March Associates Construction.
The grocery chain, which has moved from a previous location in the township, will occupy 13,500 square feet at 910 Hamburg Turnpike. It is the first of seven tenants to open at what’s known as The Parke at Hamburg, which sits just west of Valley Road.
Patrick Heaney, project manager for site, said the shopping center took about nine months to complete. The development has brought new life to a long-vacant, underused parcel along one of the town’s busiest retail corridors, despite a plan that goes back more than a decade.
A groundbreaking came last fall under the auspices of Lou March Jr., president of March Associates, whose family has lived and worked in Wayne for decades. His son, Lou March III acted as the point person with local officials in what is a rare self-development project for the construction firm.
“Six more tenants will occupy the strip mall,” Lou March III said, “The Paper Store, Ulta Beauty, The Habit Burger Grill and Sport Clips are estimated to open in October 2020.
“Everbrook Academy will likely open in November and Panera Bread will open in spring 2021.”
Trader Joe’s has relocated from the Berdan Shopping Center, which is less than a mile away on Hamburg Turnpike, and has doubled its space. Wayne Mayor Christopher Vergano joined the construction firm last week to open the new store, noting the importance of having a locally based developer whose leaders are longtime township residents.
“On behalf of March, we look forward to providing the local community with a beautiful center, full of quality tenants, which will offer great goods and services,” said Bryan Murray, the firm’s director of business development and marketing.
Lakeland Bank financed The Parke at Hamburg, whose project team also included The Dietz Partnership and Menlo Engineering Associates. R.J. Brunelli & Co. served as the center’s leasing agent.
