A development team has unveiled new details and design plans for a 118-unit luxury apartment building in Hawthorne, part of a mixed-use project that’s slated to open this summer.
Known as Hedges at Hawthorne, the complex is rising at a seven-acre former industrial site at 204 Wagaraw Road, where plans also call for 120,000 square feet of self-storage space and a retail section anchored by Planet Fitness. The Bedrin Organization and March Associates Construction broke ground on the project last spring and this week unveiled new renderings of the upscale collection of one- and two-bedroom homes.
“Our Hedges brand creates an exclusive place to call home,” said Garret Bedrin, a partner with Glen Rock-based Bedrin. “We have spent years traveling to visit beautiful projects and developing our own spin on the luxury multifamily sector. I’m incredibly proud of the team who has taken us to this halfway point and we can’t wait to share the final version with our friends and family. With over 100 prospective residents already signed up for the waitlist, we will deliver ‘Hedges at Hawthorne’ to the first residents this summer!”

Bedrin purchased the site from Merck & Co. nearly 15 years ago. The property has at times been slated for uses such as a department store and a supermarket under earlier plans that went unfulfilled, but is now set to be revitalized with the support of borough officials.
Plans for Hedges at Hawthorne call for amenities such as a rooftop deck, dog parks, co-working space and rentable private office suites for residents. At last year’s groundbreaking, Bedrin said he expects the project to draw both young families and empty-nesters who are downsizing from single-family homes, adding that residents will have complementary memberships to the new Planet Fitness.
March Associates is both a partner in the project and its general contractor. Lou March, the firm’s president, said the team is eyeing a summer opening for the self-storage and retail space, which will be followed later in the season by the residential building.
“Construction has been steady and progressing nicely,” March said. “The current state of the market, as it relates to material procurement and cost escalation, has been challenging — however, the project remains on schedule.”
