A design and development team has taken the wraps off a new boutique apartment building in Jersey City, in another addition to the fast-growing Journal Square neighborhood.
Located at 36 Jones St., the property is home to eight three-bedroom units measuring 1,350 square feet and two one-bedroom units spanning 900 square feet, according to a news release from Studio ST Architects. The structure, which is less than a five-minute walk from the Journal Square Transportation Center, also has several upscale amenities for residents and a 900-square-foot commercial space.
Studio ST Architects designed the property on behalf of developer Jud LLC.
“We are excited to contribute to the exciting rebirth of this iconic urban neighborhood,” said Esther Sperber, founder of Manhattan-based Studio ST. “36 Jones Street speaks to the families and professionals that call Jersey City home so it was important to convey that, from the inviting lobby entrance designed with a distinct Middle Eastern inspired flooring and warm natural tones, to backyard-styled gathering spaces on the rooftop.”

In detailing the project, the firm said 36 Jones targets families and young professionals looking for New York-style buildings just across the Hudson River. Both one-bedroom apartments, which are ADA-accessible, have access to a private backyard on the ground floor, while each three-bedroom home has an outdoor terrace.
Amenities include a 3,000-square-foot roof deck with lounge seating and views of Lower Manhattan, plus a fitness center, a bike room and storage units.
“I believe that people are social creatures and that they need to connect with each other,” JudLLC’s Ulie Bardosh said. “This building celebrates the balance between private space in your apartment and communal connection.
“Ester has been my creative partner in the design of this building. She understood my passion to create a unique building for this neighborhood. She translated my desire to create a welcoming, nurturing home and community for families and young professionals into a distinctive, inclusive building, a rare find that celebrates the history of the neighborhood and connects the past to the present and the community members to one another.”
Studio ST also described a design that includes a multi-tone exterior clad with metallic, gray stacked bond-pattern bricks and wood-paneled balconies. The project has repurposed what was an outdated single-family home.
Jorge Mastropietro Architects Atelier partnered with Studio ST Architects on the project, whose team also included Winston Consultants Inc., Firmitas Engineering & Structural Design, Concord Consulting, Dresdner Robin, Atlantic Artisan Construction and photographer Bilyana Dimitrova.
“We took extreme care about the design and the people that inhabit the building and hope 36 Jones Street sets a great precedent for the neighborhood,” Jorge Mastropietro said.
