A former Elizabethtown Gas building in Rahway is set to become the new home of United Way of Greater Union County, with construction now underway at the property.
According to REDCOM Design & Construction, which is based in nearby Westfield, the renovation at 219 Central Ave. began in March and is slated to be completed this summer. The firm is spearheading the project on United Way’s behalf at below cost, noting that the city of Rahway provided the building to the organization with a long-term lease of $1 per month with the provision that it renovates the building to make it fit for occupancy.
“This project has been in the works for several years, and I am grateful that REDCOM helped it become a reality,” said Julienne Cherry, CEO and president of United Way of Greater Union County. “UWGUC is forever thankful to Mayor Giacobbe for welcoming us to the city of Rahway where we will expand our family success center and continue our mission of building stronger, healthier and more compassionate communities.”
REDCOM is serving as construction manager and general contractor for the project, which includes a full interior renovation and fit-out and a roof replacement, according to a news release. The building requires all new mechanical systems, wiring and plumbing, a fire alarm system and the removal of the basement ceiling and framing.
“As a company deeply rooted in community support, we are honored to offer our construction services to United Way of Greater Union County at a discounted rate,” REDCOM CEO Ryan Teicher said. “It is our privilege to contribute to initiatives that positively impact our local communities.”
