Industry leaders will take a fresh look at the issue of distressed commercial real estate as part of an upcoming symposium hosted by the Rutgers Center for Real Estate.
Slated for Feb. 7, the program at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick will begin with an interview of Jonathan Schultz, co-founder and managing principal of Onyx Equities, by Ron Ladell of AvalonBay Communities, who serves as chair of the Center for Real Estate’s advisory board. That will give way to a panel of commercial real estate veterans who will react to an issues-based case study, authored by Ted Zangari of Sills Cummis & Gross PC and George Jacobs of Jacobs Enterprises, in a discussion that will analyze issues highlighted earlier in the program.
The event titled “Your Mixed-Use Redevelopment Project Is In Distress. Now What?” will look to highlight perils and opportunities for developers, lenders, investors, industry professionals and community leaders. It will also be the Rutgers Center for Real Estate’s first event of 2024.
This symposium is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with registration and continental breakfast, while the program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A snow date is scheduled for Feb. 8.
“We employed a similar case study format for a real estate and health care discussion, involving a cast of executives from health care companies, real estate developers and community leaders and the result was a spirited debate on the issues identified in the case study,” said Zangari, a member with Sills Cummis, who will facilitate the panelists’ dissection of the case study. “The format captivated the crowd of interested parties and we expect this program to do the same.”
Rutgers noted that, since its founding in 2004, Onyx has become one of the most diversified and active real estate investment, management, development and property service organizations in the New York metro market. Schultz leads the investor capital raising initiatives for the firm, along with the fundraising efforts for the Phalanx Funds, while he oversees its strategic planning, real estate technology development and overall investment strategy.
