A developer has secured local approvals for a plan that would bring 78 new apartments and ground-floor commercial space to a site near Carteret’s municipal complex.
In a news release, borough officials said the Pershing Estates project would replace four existing, vacant homes between 235 and 243 Pershing Ave., which the municipality reportedly acquired in recent years. In addition to the collection of one- and two-bedroom homes, the five-story building at 237 Pershing Ave. would include indoor and outdoor amenities and 1,595 square feet of medical space.
The approval for Pershing Estates Urban Renewal LLC follows the completion of another luxury rental property, The Botanic, which brought 242 units to a site on Washington Avenue.
“The rooftop amenities and views of Pershing Estates are going to be gorgeous, much like The Botanic before it,” Mayor Daniel J. Reiman said. “Carteret is booming with progress, rebuilding block by block. Here is another fine example.”
Pershing Estates will rise across the street from Borough Hall and the community center and next to Noe Street Park, the news release said. Amenities will include a rooftop terrace with potted plants, tables, chairs and fire pits, while the project will include 95 parking spaces across a lot and a garage.
The borough added that, from the apartment building’s parking lot, traffic will be restricted to make a right only onto Blanchard Street, where on-street parking will be available. Due to an expected increase in pedestrian traffic, Pershing Estates Urban Renewal is required to install raised crosswalks and stop signs at two locations on Pershing Avenue, while a handicap-accessible ramp also must be installed at the corner of Pershing and Blanchard.
The borough did not immediately provide a construction schedule for the project.
