Edison Properties has leased another 2,500 square feet at its landmark Ironside Newark property to provide a new home for a locally based gallery and artist incubator space.
The woman-run organization, Project for Empty Space, has signed a five-year commitment with plans to open this fall at the converted warehouse at 110 Edison Place, according to a news release. With an entrance off the plaza and an outdoor area, the second-floor space will serve as a gallery while housing a residence program that it says provides safe, equitable spaces for artistic innovation and complex public engagement for artists whose work is oriented toward social discourse.
Ryan Starkman of Pierson Commercial represented ownership at the 456,000-square-foot property.
“Our recent lease with Project for Empty Space demonstrates Ironside Newark’s community-focused approach,” said Lenny Lazzarino, senior vice president of leasing at Edison Properties. “As a conduit to the arts communities of Newark and New York City, Project for Empty Space will undoubtedly enrich our dynamic tenant roster and further solidify Ironside as an epicenter of innovation and creativity.”
According to the news release, Project For Empty Space will provide artists with growth and visibility through additional resources, studios and exhibition space, along with more expansive public art initiatives. That will begin with an artist in residence exhibition by artist Andrea Chung, along with an inaugural fall ball at the space that will aim to convene members of city’s creative community.
“It is with great excitement that we open these new doors to foster a cultural artery for working artists in the core of downtown Newark’s newly established arts and education district,” said, Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Pauline Jampol, co-directors of Project for Empty Space. “Our expansion to Ironside Newark will introduce a new realm of possibility for our existing studio facility and hub at 800 Broad Street. Together, our locations will bookend Edison place, increasing the footprint of public art and radically inclusive spaces available to the community.”
Ironside Newark is a roughly 116-year-old warehouse in downtown Newark that Edison Properties has redeveloped and restored to create a high-end office and retail hub. Occupiers are adjacent to Newark Penn Station, steps from the new city-owned Mulberry Commons park and a short drive from Newark Liberty International Airport.
Designed by Perkins Eastman, the building has amenities such as future restaurant outdoor seating and park-level retail fronting Mulberry Commons, a two-story lobby atrium, a rooftop terrace and high-speed internet from the city’s dark fiber optic network. Tenants include Mars Wrigley Confectionery’s North American headquarters, Baby Brezza, Ørsted, Ware Malcomb, HarbourView Equity Partners and VC Renewables.
