An online furniture seller has leased a 143,000-square-foot warehouse in Elizabeth to help support its rapid growth, following a deal brokered by Colliers International.
The tenant, Article, signed the lease at 201 Bay Ave. with landlord Hartz Mountain Industries, Colliers said in a news release. The three-year-old, Vancouver-based company is relocating its distribution center from a 22,000-square-foot warehouse in Lincoln Park.
Colliers described the deal as “an international effort,” as brokers from the firm’s New Jersey team worked with a colleague from the real estate services firm’s Vancouver office. The team representing Article included Mike Markey and Jon Tesser of Colliers’ Princeton office, who worked with Andrew Lord of the Vancouver office.
Ernie Christoph and Charlie Reese represented Hartz in-house.
“Article is a young, rapidly expanding company,” Markey said in a prepared. “The site search focused on identifying a property that would accommodate its continued growth while gaining proximity to the port — a key to controlling inbound freight cost and facilitating fast delivery to customers.”
Article delivers modern designer furniture directly to consumers at affordable prices, the news release said. It works with manufacturers around the world to offer a curated selection to customers across North America.
The company’s new home is in a decades-old warehouse that was cleared out and modernized by Hartz starting about two years ago, with the developer seeking to capitalize on its location in an exceedingly tight submarket. Those upgrades includes replacing the floor, repainting the building and expanding the rail siding that connects to the state’s busiest shipping terminal
“This property’s location — immediately adjacent to the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal — is ideal for inbound shipments and fast delivery to their customers,” Markey added. “Additionally, our client appreciated the Hartz Mountain Industries’ responsiveness and flexibility.
“Ernie Christoph and Charlie Reese were instrumental in helping to get this transaction done.”
