A new apartment building that has drawn renters from Newark’s health care and education sectors is now 80 percent leased, a mark that its developer says is validation of an emerging neighborhood in the city.
The firm, Tucker Development, announced the milestone recently at the 152-unit property known as 24 Jones. The community opened about a year ago in the city’s University Heights neighborhood and benefits from the new Springfield Avenue Marketplace, a nearby retail center that is anchored by a 70,000-square-foot ShopRite.
“From the day it opened its doors, 24 Jones has experienced an exceptional level of interest from a cross-section of renters who value the rare combination of new construction and a location in the heart of one of Newark’s most vibrant neighborhoods,” said Jacqueline Urgo, president of The Marketing Directors. “From families to young professionals and students, 24 Jones has established itself as the premier living option for individuals who desire luxury living and easy access to their jobs and educational institutions.”
In an interview last fall, Tucker executives said 24 Jones had attracted dozens of people associated with the nearby higher education institutions, University Hospital and the city’s charter and public schools. In response, the firm and its leasing team have focused more of their marketing resources in those areas.

At the time, rents ranged from roughly $1,700 for a studio to about $2,200 for a two-bedroom, with units that include stainless steel appliances, oversized windows and other high-end features. The building also has amenities such as a fitness center, resident lounge and Wi-Fi and flat screen televisions throughout its common areas.
The Marketing Directors is the exclusive marketing and residential leasing agent for 24 Jones, which is convenient to the area highways and mass transit. Tucker also said there is a bus stop on Springfield Avenue and Jones Street.
