Development firm Walters has welcomed its first residents to a 72-unit affordable housing community in Howell, where full build-out is slated for the end of this year.
The project, known as Cornerstone at Howell, will ultimately include nine buildings with a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments at 1000 Cornerstone Drive. The Barnegat-based developer has completed five of those buildings, offering a location directly west of Route 9 and minutes from Interstate 195.
“We are so pleased to see families move into their new sustainable homes,” said Joe Del Duca, partner and director of affordable housing for Walters. “Cornerstone at Howell is important to the community, and is an example of Monmouth County benefitting from a successful public-private partnership.”
As with other recent projects, the firm expects to achieve a gold rating under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design scale, along with Energy Star certification. It’s doing so while adding to the township’s affordable housing stock: The project is open to individuals and families that do not make more than 60 percent of the county’s median income.
Amenities at the complex include an outdoor grilling and picnic area, children’s tot lot, clubhouse with fitness center and computer workstations. Residents also benefit from activities and events offered through a staffed social services coordinator, along with on-site management and maintenance.
