PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
Reopening Historic Hinchliffe
Since its opening in 1932, Hinchliffe Stadium had been the center of the Paterson, New Jersey, community. The stadium once served as venue for a diverse range of athletic and cultural events, like the Negro League games.
Legends including hall of famer Larry Doby, renowned player who broke the American League color barrier in 1947 and grew up in Paterson playing football and baseball in Hinchliffe Stadium for Paterson’s Eastside High School, was just one of many iconic baseball players to take the field in the stadium’s tenure. Through its years, Hinchliffe has hosted the likes of baseball, boxing, auto racing (like stock and midget car racing) and professional football.
However, the stadium fell into disrepair and closed its doors in 1997. It sat abandoned until 2021, when the city made renovation plans in honor of the city’s history and to revitalize the community. The $103 million Hinchliffe Stadium neighborhood restoration project represents Paterson’s most ambitious mixed-use development endeavor. Pennoni was honored to provide survey, energy, MEP, structural, geotechnical, civil/site services and more to the transformative redevelopment.
On May 17, 2023, Hinchliffe Stadium held its first baseball game in 26 years for the Eastside High School!
