A global design firm has acquired SOSH Architects, the practice behind scores of well-known casino and hospitality properties in Atlantic City and elsewhere during its 45 years in business.
Based Atlantic City, SOSH is now set to be the ninth regional office for Los Angeles-based WATG, the companies announced Monday. That will provide both firms’ clients with a deeper bench of expertise in the gaming and hospitality sectors, they said, while noting that the industry is pivoting to prioritize integrated resorts and mixed-use developments.
SOSH’s vast portfolio includes recent projects such as the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, where it served as architect of record for the renovation of the 4 million-square-foot former Trump Taj Mahal, as well as Boraie Development’s 250-unit apartment building dubbed 600 NoBe at North Beach. It also designed a 56,000-square-foot academic building for Stockton University that opened in the city in 2018, as well as the new headquarters of South Jersey Gas.
The firm’s gaming clients, meantime, include the likes Tropicana, Bally’s and Mohegan Sun as well as developers behind retail, tourism and civic projects throughout southern New Jersey and other regions.
“This integration has been thoughtfully considered and directly supports the strategic growth of both firms,” said David Moore, CEO of WATG. “SOSH has been recognized as a leader in gaming industry design, and WATG the leader in hospitality. As we come together, we’re excited by the opportunity to elevate our offering to our clients, helping them to differentiate, grow and succeed.”
The acquisition follows WATG’s recent announcement of its expansion into the Dallas market.
“Our relationship goes back decades when our firms worked together on multiple projects in the Atlantic City market,” said Tom Sykes, founding principal of SOSH. “We’re proud to come together now and look forward to the opportunity to work as a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, sharing our expertise in the gaming industry and gaining from WATG’s elite and global presence. The process of integration will be now begin and will further strengthen the service that we can offer our clients on both existing and future projects.”
